ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This large-scale emergency project was in response to the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The State of Louisiana implemented a plan to strategically place sand berms in the way of the migrating oil spill in order to protect the sensitive marsh and wetlands along the Gulf Coast. Great Lakes utilized three large hydraulic dredges, two booster stations, three hopper dredges, eight material transport barges, a large clamshell dredge, over 100,000 feet of pipeline and numerous support vessels to construct over nine miles of sand berms. Several hundred dredge crew, engineering and management staff participated in the effort.
