DREDGING PROJECTS

North Carolina Coast Dredging Project

Dare County, North Carolina, a region commonly referred to as The Outer Banks, has some of the most pristine shorelines in the nation, but is also subject to damage caused by powerful storms. The county, in partnership with local municipalities, has embarked on a plan to restore and preserve the fragile coastline while establishing a strong defense against increasingly powerful storms to protect property and infrastructure in the coastal communities. GLDD has contracted with Dare County on multiple occasions over recent years and has delivered millions of cubic yards of sand to Dare County’s beaches in the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills, among others. Dare County’s renourishment program includes over eight miles of shoreline, and was named Best Restored Beaches for 2018 by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA). During the contract execution process, GLDD rigorously evaluates each dredging project and carefully implements a specific plan on how to best utilize its diverse fleet to provide both seasonal visitors and permanent residents with an exceptional shoreline experience along the Outer Banks.
