Amboy Aggregates
Amboy mines sand from the entrance channel to New York Harbor and markets sand and aggregate for road and building construction. Great Lakes' dredging expertise and its partner's knowledge of the aggregate market formed the basis for the joint venture. Amboy is the only East Coast aggregate producer to mine sand from the ocean floor.
In 1988, Amboy built the Sandy Hook, a specially designed dredge for sand mining, de-watering and dry delivery, the only one of its kind in the United States. Amboy's ocean-based supply of sand provides a long-term competitive advantage in the Northeast, as land-based sand deposits are depleted or rendered less cost competitive by escalating land values.
